DMARC is the rule a domain owner publishes telling mail servers what to do with email that pretends to come from them. The stronger it is, the more likely scammers switch to lookalike domains, which is why the next section matters.

Domain history

How long has amazon.com existed?

The Internet Archive first saved a copy of it on 12 December 1998. Scam domains are usually days or weeks old. A sender domain registered recently, pretending to be a company this established, is a strong warning sign.

Can receive email

We check misspellings, look-alike characters, and the Amazon name combined with words like “order”, “orders”, “rewards” across common domain endings. A registered lookalike is not proof of a scam: companies often register typos of their own name to protect customers. But you should never trust a message from one.

Know the pattern

Scams using the Amazon name

Calls or emails about an expensive order or a Prime renewal you did not make are a very common Amazon impersonation scam. Check your orders by opening the app or typing the address yourself.

Amazon keeps copies of the messages it sends you in the Message Centre in your account, so you can compare a suspicious email against it.

Retail scams borrow the trust you already have in big stores: fake orders, fake prizes, and fake business inquiries.

An order you did not make

A message confirms an expensive order or subscription and gives a number to call to cancel. The refund agent then asks for remote access to your computer or your bank details.

A free voucher or prize

Social media posts or texts promise a gift card, hamper or prize for completing a short survey. The survey collects your personal details or card number.

A fake supplier or wholesale inquiry

Businesses receive inquiries that appear to come from a major retailer, asking for a price list or minimum order quantity. The goal is an upfront fee or a large fake order.

Step by step

How to check a message that claims to be from Amazon

  1. 1

Look at the actual sender address, not just the name. Tap or hover over the name to reveal it. It must end in @amazon.com or @amazon.co.uk or @amazon.de or @amazon.ca or @amazon.com.au or @amazon.in or @amazon.fr or @amazon.it or @amazon.es or @amazon.co.jp, or a subdomain of one.

  2. 2

Do not use links or phone numbers from the message. Type amazon.com into your browser or open the official Amazon app, and check your account there.

  3. 3

Slow down when you see urgency, small fees, gift cards, crypto, or requests for codes and passwords. Those are the levers every scam pulls.

  4. 4

Still unsure? Paste the sender address or link into the checker above.

Questions

Amazon scam FAQ

What email address does Amazon use?

Genuine Amazon email comes from addresses ending in @amazon.com, @amazon.co.uk, @amazon.de, @amazon.ca, @amazon.com.au, @amazon.in, @amazon.fr, @amazon.it, @amazon.es, @amazon.co.jp, or a subdomain of those (for example something@mail.amazon.com). An address on any other domain, even one containing "amazon", is not Amazon.

Can scammers fake an @amazon.com email address?

Moderate. Forged @amazon.com email is sent to spam or junk rather than blocked outright. A fake can still reach your junk folder looking real.

Are there websites pretending to be Amazon?

On 14 October 2026 we checked 180 lookalike domain names and found 80 registered. 39 appear to be owned by Amazon or a brand-protection service, 1 are parked or for sale, and 31 could not be linked to Amazon while hosting a website or accepting email. A registered lookalike is not proof of a scam, but any message from one deserves suspicion.

What should I do if I clicked a link in a fake Amazon message?

Do not enter anything else. If you typed a password, change it at amazon.com straight away and turn on two-step sign-in. If you entered card or bank details, call your bank using the number on your card. Then report the message using the guide below.
