Scams using the Avast name

Fake renewal invoices are one of the most common email scams in the world, and they almost always borrow an antivirus brand.

A renewal invoice for hundreds

An email says you have been charged for a renewal and gives a number to call to cancel. The refund process is designed to take control of your computer or bank account.

Your protection has expired

Pop-ups warn that your protection expired and push you to a fake purchase page.

Step by step

How to check a message that claims to be from Avast

  1. 1

Look at the actual sender address, not just the name. Tap or hover over the name to reveal it. It must end in @avast.com, or a subdomain of one.

  2. 2

Do not use links or phone numbers from the message. Type avast.com into your browser or open the official Avast app, and check your account there.

  3. 3

Slow down when you see urgency, small fees, gift cards, crypto, or requests for codes and passwords. Those are the levers every scam pulls.

  4. 4

Still unsure? Paste the sender address or link into the checker above.

Avast scam FAQ

Genuine Avast email comes from addresses ending in @avast.com, or a subdomain of those (for example something@mail.avast.com). An address on any other domain, even one containing "avast", is not Avast.

Can scammers fake an @avast.com email address?

We are running the first check on avast.com. Until then, assume a sender address alone proves nothing and verify by visiting avast.com yourself.

Are there websites pretending to be Avast?

Our first lookalike scan for Avast is queued. Check back shortly.

What should I do if I clicked a link in a fake Avast message?

Do not enter anything else. If you typed a password, change it at avast.com straight away and turn on two-step sign-in. If you entered card or bank details, call your bank using the number on your card. Then report the message using the guide below.
